Growing Lupins

Lupins

Lupins are tall, colourful perennials making them a popular choice for borders and cottage gardens. Seeds are typically sown indoors from February to April or directly outdoors from March to May, with plants transplanted outside in April or May. Lupins grow best in full sun to partial shade and prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil, avoiding heavy or waterlogged conditions.

Flowering from May to July, lupins produce striking spikes that attract bees and other pollinators. Plants should be spaced 30–45 cm apart and watered regularly while establishing, becoming moderately drought tolerant once mature. As hardy perennials, they die back in winter and regrow in spring. Deadheading can encourage additional blooms, and taller varieties may need support in exposed areas.
