Runner Beans
Runner beans are anand easy-to-grow crop perfect for beginners. Seeds can be sown indoors from April to May or directly outdoors from late May to June once the risk of frost has passed. Plants grow best in a sunny, sheltered position with at least 6–8 hours of sunlight per day. Runner beens like fertile soil enriched with compost or some well-rotted manure. Each plant needs a strong support structure such as canes or trellises to climb as they grow.
Runner beans are normally ready to harvest from July to October or around 12–16 weeks after sowing. Plants should be spaced 20–30 cm apart and watered regularly, especially during flowering and pod formation, as dry conditions can reduce your crop. They are not frost hardy, so planting should always be delayed until warmer conditions arrive. Regular picking of young, tender pods encourages continuous production and ensures a long, productive harvest season.
