Oregano
Oregano is a low-maintenance, hardy herb that grows well. Seeds are typically sown indoors from March to April or directly outdoors from May to June, with plants transplanted after the risk of frost has passed. Oregano thrives in full sun (6–8 hours daily) and prefers light, well-drained soil, making it ideal for garden beds, raised beds, or containers. It can also be easily grown from cuttings or shop-bought plants.
Plants can be harvested from June to October, usually around 6–8 weeks after sowing. Oregano should be spaced 20–30 cm apart and watered sparingly, as it is drought tolerant once established and does not like overly wet soil. As a hardy perennial, it can survive UK winters and regrow each year, especially if protected with mulch. Regular trimming encourages bushy growth and improves leaf flavour.
