How to help your garden birds
The RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) have released some guidence about feeding birds safely this summer.
We all love to see bird in our garden but species such as Greenfinches are experiencing over a 65% decline in number due to a disease called trichomonosis. This disease spreads where birds gather in large numbers including the humble bird feeder.
Their advice “Feed seasonally. Feed safely“. The RSPB suggest two feeding times; 1st May to 31st October – this first feeding block should only include mealworms, fatballs or suet balls. During this period, seeds or peanuts should not be used. Between 1st November to 30 April all bird foods can be offered included seeds and peanuts.

Feeding safely
One of the guilty culpits of this problem are our bird feeders. Below are some recommendation to promote safe feeding in our gardens this summer.
- Cleaning. Clean your bird feeds and bird baths weekly to promote good hygiene. Remember to empty old feed and clear away any droppings
- Using hanging feeders. According the RSPB, research as shown feed left of flat surfaces such as trays and bird tables is of a high risk of spreading disease. Empty and renew food every two days.
- Keep bird food dry. Disease survives and spreads on damp food. Choose a feeder fitted with a cover/hood to prevent food geeting wet. If you notice your bird food is damp, empty the feeder and refill.
- Change bird baths daily. Tap water is better for bird baths and should be changed daily. Ponds are the best way to provide water to birds and other wildlife in your garden.
